Washtenaw Solar Project – Update
- The proposed Washtenaw Solar Project remains under review before the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), where the developer is seeking approval to construct a large-scale solar facility in Saline Township.
- The Township is actively participating in this proceeding to defend its zoning ordinance and to ensure that local priorities, including the protection of residents, agricultural land, and the Township’s rural character, are fully considered in the state review process.
- This is a significant utility-scale project proposed on private land, including solar arrays, related infrastructure, and connection to the regional electric grid. The filed materials also reflect that there are important, unresolved questions regarding how the project fits within the Township’s long-established land use plans and development standards.
- The Township’s involvement is focused on ensuring that its carefully adopted zoning regulations—developed through public input and reflecting local values—are given appropriate weight in the decision-making process.
- This case is being considered under Public Act 233, a state law that allows certain renewable energy projects to seek state approval under specific conditions.
